summary

I can open code-server, but suddenly I can't see any extension loaded
I see 'Activating extensions' for seconds, but no any extension loaded without any failure message.
this also makes git don't work, check the attached screenshot.

OS/Web Information

  • Web Browser: Google chrome Version 89.0.4389.128 (Official Build) (64-bit)
  • Local OS: windows 8.1 pro preview
  • Remote OS: Debian GNU/Linux 10 (buster)
  • Remote Architecture:
  • code-server --version: 3.9.3

Steps to Reproduce

  1. installed via script: curl -fsSL https://code-server.dev/install.sh | sh

Expected

run normally with all extensions activated.

Actual

extensions don't activated.

    Unfortunately, I cannot reproduce locally (I tested two extensions - theme and Vim)

    Next Steps

    Can you:

    • list all the extensions you're using (or post a screenshot)
    • uninstall all extensions and see if you get the same issue

    I've seen this in the past happen in VS Code and it's usually from a specific extension. Hoping that's the case here.

    Hmm... wonder what these could be from. Hard to tell.

    • list all the extensions you're using (or post a screenshot)
    • uninstall all extensions and see if you get the same issue

    Did you try these two things? ^

    Extensions are stored in ~/.local/share/code-server/extensions

    So as long as you back up that folder, you should be able to easily add them again. Read more here

    I removed all extensions (renamed the extensions dir), but the same issue.
    I also tried to remove the user-data dir entierly ~/.local/share/code-server, so I use a fresh instance of code-server, but it didn't help

    note: it was working fine in the same environment, but this issue happened suddenly

    Thanks for giving that a shot. Hmm...the hardest part is debugging this without being able to reproduce.

    As a workaround, may I suggest looking at deploy-code-server and trying an alternative environment?

    Maybe @code-asher has some insight into what might be causing this.

    I experience the same problem.

      System:
    OS: Linux 5.14 Fedora Linux 35 (Cloud Edition)
    CPU: (2) x64 DO-Regular
    Memory: 118.57 MB / 1.92 GB
    Shell: 5.1.8 - /bin/bash

    Installed using curl -fsSL https://code-server.dev/install.sh | sh on a digitalocean instance.

    Only extension I have is GitLens installed via VSIX downloaded from open-vsx.

    I don't know if it's helpful or not but I see this error in extension host log: [exthost] [error] [ExtHostStorage] {"code":"Unknown","name":"Canceled (FileSystemError)"}

    Strangest thing is that it fails most of the times but then once in a while it works. Here's the full log where in the beginning it wasn't working but then after several Reload Window it just worked:

    Default extensions seem to load fine.

    Not sure if it's helpful when user extension does load it takes a very long time and reconnecting several times to exthost socket (when vscode is already loaded in the browser):

    While installing more extensions and looking at logs I saw that if I install extension that does not work and maybe even throws an exception all other extensions stop working. Worst thing UX wise is that there's no way of knowing what caused all extensions to stop working without digging it to exthost logs. Currently I've found and already reported LeonardSSH.vscord extension does not work. Upon removing broken extension other extensions start working.

    So the reason why I switched to code-server is that currently I have very slow connection (2.5-5mb down, up is basically non-existent) and uploading something would take forever. And this seems what could be another problem, if extension fails to activate due to slow network it will not try to reactivate. This is just a guess
