    Hmm I am not sure. I experimented with this tasks.json on 4.121.0 (using Firefox):

    {
      "version": "2.0.0",
      "tasks": [
        {
          "label": "echo a test string",
          "type": "shell",
          "command": "echo hello world",
          "group": "build",
          "presentation": {
            "reveal": "always",
            "panel": "new"
          }
        }
      ]
    }

    And it shows up for me when I go to Terminal > Run Task

    Image

    And when I run it:

    Image

    I did notice it can take up to 5 seconds for the Run Build Task menu to appear, but my task shows up there too.

    I was trying all day reinstall and I've noticed when i select Terminal > Run Build Tasks it hangs with task bar spinning "Fetching build tasks...", and when I look 'top' command i find a node process eat much processing about 12% and when i kill it the system says
    "The remote extension host terminated unexpectedly. Restarting..." while this moment the Build Tasks menu appears immediately and if dimissed and try to get it back after system fully restore it is spinning again "Fetching build tasks..."!!!

    new notices!!!
    the node I kill is keep adding more nodes, so i get the node with lower process number ID and kill it then immediately problem solved and Terminal > Run Build Task work as expected.

    Upon starting the first Ouput "Tasks" what i see is "Activating Task provider java" then I kill the node process then then next line after initializing the extension host is "Activating Task provider all", why it is Java at first then All after killing node, that what i can't figure out!!!

    Initial Load of code server on browser
    the Task provider initially is "Java"
    Image

    the top command result, i kill the node with lower ID that keep creates crashing nodes with higher IDs
    Image

    the new Task provider now is "All"

    thanks

    /home/cs/lib/node --dns-result-order=ipv4first /home/cs/lib/vscode/out/bootstrap-fork --type=extensionHost --transformURIs --useHostProxy=false

    kill -9 $(ps aux | grep "[n]ode.*--type=extensionHost" | awk '{print $2}')
