Commitizen is not compatible with recent versions of ipython because of its dependency on questionary #1249

Description

@lsorber

Description

Not so recent versions of ipython require prompt-toolkit>=3.0.41, but commitizen depends on questionary<3.0, the latest version of which depends on prompt-toolkit<=3.0.361. To comply with both requirements, you need to downgrade ipython to a version of end 2022.

Related: #5

Possible Solution

  1. Ask questionary to release a new version (their master branch relaxed the constraint on prompt-toolkit).
  2. Or, replace or remove the dependency on questionary.

    Closing as fixed by an upstream relax in questionary 2.1.0.

    Background:

    • The original incompatibility was questionary <=2.0.x pinning prompt_toolkit<=3.0.36, which conflicted with ipython's prompt_toolkit>=3.0.41.
    • questionary 2.1.0 relaxed the constraint to prompt_toolkit>=2.0,<4.0, removing the conflict.
    • commitizen master pins questionary (>=2.0,<3.0) (pyproject.toml:16), which now resolves cleanly with current ipython 8.x and 9.x.
    • The repo''s own uv.lock resolves questionary 2.1.1 + prompt_toolkit 3.0.51 + ipython 9.12.0 together, demonstrating the scenario the original issue said was impossible.

    If anyone hits this again on a newer ipython release, please reopen with the resolved environment so we can pin further.

    Surfaced via the round-2 triage in #1965.
