Move dxf Library to Gradle #981

Desired enhancement

In PR #888 I took a little shortcut with the existing Java based libraries and made them still reliant on the old Ant build system.

We would need the ant based build.xml to be replaced by a proper build.gradle.kts version to further remove our reliance on Ant

    Hi! @Stefterv

    I recently explored migrating the DXF library from Ant to Gradle and opened PR #1031 with my initial implementation. The changes included:

    Replacing the build.xml with a build.gradle.kts file

    Ensuring core.jar is properly handled via Gradle

    Successfully building the DXF jar using :java:libraries:dxf:dxfJar

    I understand the importance of getting assigned before starting work and apologize for jumping ahead. I'm really interested in contributing and learning through this process. If you're open to it, I'd love to be officially assigned to this issue so I can refine the migration further based on feedback and reopen the PR.

    Looking forward to your thoughts!

    Hi @LalitNarayanYadav Thank you for your contribution and your enthusiasm.

    I took at your PR as it stands right now, and there are changes in areas that should not be altered. Please restrict your changes to the build process of the dxf library and try to make sure you do no change any of the other libraries.

    Hello @Stefterv , I am working with @SilasVM @kaybcodes and @awood0727 and we would like to work on this issue. Would it be possible to assign us?

    Hi @npNSU, of course, I have just created a new PR at #1189 that can hopefully serve as an example on how to approach this migration. Please take a look at the PR and give me a quick summary of how your PR will differ from the one I just created and I'll assign you to this issue!

    @npNSU

    Great! We just took a look at your PR, and some differences we would make in our PR would be:

    • Modifying the following file paths: /java/libraries/dxf/build.gradle.kts & /java/build.gradle.kts to correlate with the dxf library.

    • Modifying line 89 of /java/build.gradle.kts. Change it to: val libraries = arrayOf(“pdf”, "dxf").

    • Possibly leave out the dependency lines, 17-21 in /java/libraries/pdf/build.gradle.kts of code as our research showed that gradle manages and installs its own dependencies (This is our current understanding of Gradle’s dependency management. Please let us know if we are on the right track or if we should research further.):

    dependencies{

    compileOnly(project(":core"))
    implementation("com.lowagie:itext:2.1.7")

    }

    • Finally, remove the build.xml file (/java/libraries/dxf/build.xml) as once it’s converted to Gradle, the file will no longer be needed for building the library.

    Cool!

    Only note, please leave the existing build.xml file, as the rest of the Ant based system still relies on it.

    Thank you for contributing!
